Impossible to confuse with any other knife, the oyster knife has a very specific look. It is mainly characterized by a short, dull blade about 2.5-4 inches long. The main purpose of such a knife is to open the oyster's shell, which is why its blade is often rounded to avoid destroying the precious meat. Some have fine serrations that make it easier to cut through the membrane and muscle to separate the oyster meat. Many have a baffle at the junction of the handle and blade that prevents the knife from going too deep into the shell.
